Konaya Curry Udon

Konaya Curry Udon - Prawn Tempura Curry Udon (Ebiten Curry Udon)

Konaya Curry Udon - Prawn Tempura Curry Udon (Ebiten Curry Udon)

One type of Japanese food that I could eat every day and never get tired of is curry udon. But not just any old Japanese curry udon, it has to be Konaya curry udon! I’m not particularly partial to normal Japanese curry udon and when people ask me what my favourite dish is and I say curry udon, I usually get a lot of confused or surprised looks. However Konaya curry udon is very different from the usual curry udon. The curry soup has a very unique flavour and is boiled thoroughly for three days until it has a thick and creamy consistency. It has a mild spicy and sweet flavour and is supposed to be made from twenty two different ingredients and spices. The udon itself is cooked almost al dente and has a firm and chewy texture.

The curry udon can be eaten plain or with one of several different toppings including prawn tempura, beef with collagen, cheese, boiled vegetables, fried tofu, deep fried rice cake and even tempura banana! I would definitely recommend the prawn tempura as the prawn is big and juicy and always perfectly cooked in a crunchy thick tempura batter. The udon always comes with a small side salad but you can order a side dish of brown rice which is great for eating with the remaining curry soup in the bowl after eating all the udon.

Konaya’s specialty is it’s curry udon but for those who prefer rice, the curry soup can be eaten with rice instead. They have also recently started serving udon with a plain dashi broth but I’m yet to try this as I can never resist ordering the udon with their curry soup!

Korean Seaweed Flavour Jagariko And Black Pepper Jagariko

Korean Seaweed And Black Pepper JagarikoJagariko is my utmost favourite snack to munch on in Japan. Think of SUPER crunchy potato sticks with a subtle flavour. Jagariko usually comes in three different flavours: butter potato, salad (not as strange as it sounds) and cheese. But every so often they come out with limited edition flavours, this time being Korean Seaweed flavour and black pepper flavour! Delish!

Nagoya Women’s Marathon 2012

Nagoya Women's Marathon Tiffany Pendant And Menard Cosmetics

Nagoya Women's Marathon Tiffany Pendant And Menard Cosmetics

Last weekend I took some time off to travel down to Nagoya to participate in the Nagoya Women’s Marathon, my second marathon in 2 weeks! Crazy I know but this was the first year that they gave Tiffany pendants as a reward to all finishers :)

The 7 hour limit marathon course was fairly flat throughout making it an easy one to complete and the weather this year was pleasantly mild and sunny. A good choice of snacks were given along the route much to my delight including Kinoko No Yama (mushroom shaped Japanese chocolate and biscuit snacks) and red bean filled buns! Yum!

At the finish line we were presented with our Tiffany pendants by specially hired “good looking men” or “ikemen” as they are called in Japan lol. The pendants were engraved with the words “Go Women” and “Nagoya Women’s Marathon 2012” and came beautifully wrapped in trademark Tiffany eggshell blue boxes tied with white ribbon. We were then given various other goodies including a t-shirt, towel and various snacks and cosmetic samples.

All in all it was a well organised and enjoyable marathon to run. It definitely had the best freebies! The Japanese cosmetic company Menard was one of the sponsors so all runners were given a makeup bag filled with travel sized products at the Expo :)

Happy White Day! ♥

Happy White Day Dessert Club Harie Baumkuchen Cafe

People are mad for German bakery food in Japan and especially for Baumkuchen which is a kind of layered cake which resembles tree rings hence the name. I went to the Club Harie cafe in Tobu department store in Ikebukuro which is a popular Baumkuchen shop and got this kawaii White Day baumkuchen dessert with berries, cream and white chocolate hearts ♥

For more information on Valentines Day in Japan see my Valentines Day post.

Tokyo Marathon 2012 Jesus Runner

Tokyo Marathon 2012 Jesus RunnerLast Sunday I was fortunate enough to be able to run Tokyo marathon again for the third year in a row. There were a lot of runners dressed up this year in costumes including Minnie Mouse, Spiderman and Chopper from the popular Japanese manga One Piece and even a group of men that dressed up as the Korean girl group Kara. But I was really impressed with Mr Makoto Takeuchi (竹内 真) who I came across around the 28km mark on the route just near Sensoji Temple in Asakusa. He was dressed up as Jesus and was wearing nothing except for a tiny loincloth in the freezing cold 6C that day and carrying a huge cross on his back. He amazingly completed the course in 5 hours and 11 minutes running the whole way in bare feet! I managed to catch him later after the race at Tokyo Big Sight and take this photo.

Park Hyatt Tokyo Peak Bar Happy Hour

Park Hyatt Tokyo Peak Bar

Park Hyatt Tokyo Peak Bar

The Park Hyatt is one of my favourite hotels in Tokyo and besides housing the famous New York Bar, there is The Peak Bar on the 41st floor which has a great daily happy hour. For 5200 yen for the gents and 4500 for the ladies, two hours of all-you-can-drink wine, whisky, beer and cocktails complemented by a selection of food can be enjoyed whilst taking in Tokyo’s stunning skyline view.

Park Hyatt Tokyo Peak Bar Happy Hour

The Peak Bar has a very relaxed ambiance and is softly lit by paper lanterns to give it a magical feel. The service is good and the place is never crowded so it is perfect for a quiet drink with friends or a romantic date although prices of drinks are fairly steep if you intend to stay past the 2 hours allocated.

The Peak Bar happy hour is daily from 5-9pm. Park Hyatt Tokyo 41st Floor, 3-7-1-2 Nishi-Shinjuku, Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo.

Matcha Cookies

Decided to treat myself today to some scrumptious matcha green tea cookies with white chocolate sandwiched inbetween from Tobu Department Store in Ikebukuro as well as some delicious freshly made ones from the Park Hyatt Tokyo Pastry Boutique. The ones from the Park Hyatt are definitely nicer than the ones from Tobu and have that fresh home-baked taste. The Park Hyatt even has an online shop so you can have them delivered to you if you can’t make it to their shop in Shinjuku!
